{"id":618,"date":"2019-05-25T18:40:00","date_gmt":"2019-05-25T16:40:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/visitatina.com\/?p=618"},"modified":"2020-06-05T14:06:36","modified_gmt":"2020-06-05T12:06:36","slug":"the-melfa-a-river-with-an-ancient-name","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/visitatina.com\/en\/places\/the-melfa-a-river-with-an-ancient-name\/","title":{"rendered":"The Melfa, a river with an ancient name"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Quoted in the <strong>The Peutinger Map<\/strong> under the name of <strong>Melfel<\/strong>, lies at the foot of the <strong>Mount Meta<\/strong> and of the <strong>Mount Petroso<\/strong>, where a thousand springs of clear, cool water, beneath centuries-old beech trees, flow into the <strong>Canneto Valley<\/strong>, in the <strong>Municipality of Settefrati<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"742\" src=\"https:\/\/visitatina.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Tabula-Peutingeriana-fiume-melfa-atina.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-767\" srcset=\"https:\/\/visitatina.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Tabula-Peutingeriana-fiume-melfa-atina.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/visitatina.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Tabula-Peutingeriana-fiume-melfa-atina-300x223.jpg 300w, https:\/\/visitatina.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Tabula-Peutingeriana-fiume-melfa-atina-768x570.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption>The Peutinger Map showing the name of the River Melfel<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A land where ancient Italic peoples gathered (<strong>Volsci<\/strong>, <strong>Samnites<\/strong>, <strong>Marsi<\/strong> e <strong>Peligni<\/strong>), who had a temple here dedicated to the <strong>the goddess Mefite<\/strong> (6th\/5th century BC), it later became a place of pilgrimage to the <strong>Black Madonna<\/strong> (now the Basilica and Shrine of the Blessed Virgin Mary), which supplanted the ancient pagan cult from the 8th century AD onwards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-style-large is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>The Melfa is mentioned by Strabo (Geography, V, 3, 9) <br>which describes it as a \u201cgreat river\u201d <br>near the large town of Aquino<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From there it plunges down, forming hundreds of small waterfalls and whirlpools, which are emerald green, sapphire blue or indigo in colour, depending on the sky and the lush vegetation typical of the Mediterranean scrub, into the <strong>Comino Valley<\/strong>, in the area of <strong>Picinisco<\/strong>, passing beneath the ancient <strong>Roman bridge<\/strong>, known as <strong>The Branches<\/strong> and as we made our way through the enchanting <strong>Borgo Castellone<\/strong>, a factory village (paper mill), similar to San Leucio in Caserta, which once had a mill, an oil press, a shop selling food and other goods, a school and a church. Just before that are the dam and <strong>artificial lake<\/strong> by <strong>Grottacampanaro<\/strong> and a power station \u2013 the second to be built in Europe \u2013 which supplied power to paper mills and villages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/visitatina.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/ponte-romano-22Le-Branche22-Picinisco-orazio-riccardi.jpg\" alt=\"Roman bridge at Le Branche, Picinisco \u2013 Orazio Riccardi\" class=\"wp-image-771\" width=\"511\" height=\"720\" srcset=\"https:\/\/visitatina.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/ponte-romano-22Le-Branche22-Picinisco-orazio-riccardi.jpg 681w, https:\/\/visitatina.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/ponte-romano-22Le-Branche22-Picinisco-orazio-riccardi-213x300.jpg 213w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 511px) 100vw, 511px\" \/><figcaption>The Roman bridge \u201cLe Branche\u201d in Picinisco<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the <strong>Atina Plain<\/strong>, the habitat of the exquisite <strong>\u201cCannellino DOP\u201d bean\u201d<\/strong> and the sumptuous <strong>\u201cCabernet DOC\u201d<\/strong>, joins the stream <strong>Mollarino<\/strong>, whose springs rise in the Mainarde mountains, in the municipality of S. Biagio Saracinisco.<br>It then continues, running alongside the old Visocchi paper mill and the historic mill of S.
