Almost at the same time that the aforesaid Temple was built by Bishop Maximus of Atina in the place where it is said to be at the foot of the Mount, and precisely where the Castle of Vicalvi stands today, at the expense and to the industry of this most zealous Prelate, a comfortable Church was also built for the glory of Saint Nicander the Martyr, as the Chronicle of Atina continues to say about the deeds of the aforesaid Bishop Maximus.
Construxit quoque Ecclesiam in honorem S. Nicandri Martyris, in pede Montis ubi nunc est Castrum Vicalbi. And our Palombo, in the annotations he made on this Maximus Bishop of Atina with the aforementioned chronicle and truth, asserts that he is standing today with a rich and very comfortable prebend. Hoc Templum a Maximo edificatum testantur etiam Chronica Atinates. Extat adhuc et habet pinguem Prebendam Superioribus annis instauratum fuit.
Almost at the same time that the people of Atina built the aforementioned temple at the behest of Bishop Maximus, at the place known as “the foot of the mountain” - precisely where the Castle of Vicalvi stands today - thanks to the commitment and resources of this zealous prelate, a functional and well-structured church was also built in honour of Saint Nicander the Martyr. In confirmation of this, the Chronicle of Atina goes on to recount the events associated with this bishop Maximus:
“He also built a church in honour of St Nicander Martyr, at the foot of the mountain, where the Castle of Vicalvi now stands.”
Even our Palombo, in his annotations on this bishop Maximus, corroborating what is reported in the Chronicle of Atina and in agreement with historical truth, states that the church still exists and is endowed with a rich and comfortable prebend.
“This temple built by Maximus is also attested in the Chronicles of Atina. It still exists and is provided with a conspicuous prebend, and has been restored in past years.”
